What workplaces actually pay for music

If staff or visitors can hear music, in an open-plan office, a breakout area, or reception, you need a licence. Collecting societies typically charge workplaces by headcount or floor area. Melodial replaces both the licence and the music source.

OneMusic fees based on its published rate schedules. Includes 10% GST. The traditional figure includes an estimated music subscription of about $25/month, since a licence does not include a music source. Full details on our licensing guide.

How can we skip OneMusic?

OneMusic collects fees for music registered with collecting societies. If you play mainstream music in the office, Spotify, radio, CDs, you owe them a licence fee.

Melodial is different. We own or directly licence every track in our catalogue. None of our music is registered with OneMusic (APRA AMCOS and PPCA) or any other collecting society. No royalties to collect means no licence fees to pay.

Your Melodial subscription is your licence. One flat price covers your whole office, open-plan floor, breakout areas, kitchen, and reception.

Certificate of Compliance included. Download your official licence certificate from your account. If OneMusic or any licensing body contacts your office or workplace, show them the certificate. You're covered. And if you need help responding, forward us their email and we'll draft the reply.

The three rights you need to play music commercially

There are three separate rights involved in playing music in a business. The traditional system makes you deal with them across multiple bills. With Melodial, all three are in the one subscription.

Recording rights

The right to stream a specific sound recording of a song.

✓ Covered by Melodial

Publishing rights

The right to use the underlying composition and lyrics.

✓ Covered by Melodial

Public performance rights

The right to play music in a commercial environment where customers can hear it.

✓ Covered by Melodial

Melodial owns or directly licenses every track in its catalogue. None of it is registered with any collecting society, so there are no royalties to collect and no licence fees to pay. Your subscription is your licence.

Common questions from offices and workplaces

Does an office really need a music licence?
Yes, unfortunately. If staff or visitors can hear music, whether in an open-plan space, a breakout area, or reception, it counts as a public performance and needs a commercial licence, even for a small office. The good news: with Melodial, that licence is already inside your $9.99/month subscription.
Can staff just play their own Spotify?
We wish. Personal streaming accounts are licensed for private use only, so playing them where colleagues or visitors can hear the music is still an unlicensed public performance, whatever the plan. Melodial works the same way in practice, an app connected to your speakers, except the commercial licence is built in.
What does Melodial Basic include for one office?
One flat $9.99/month (or $99.99/year) subscription covers the music and the licence for a single stream, playing to as many speakers as you like at one location, with a downloadable Certificate of Compliance and playback on any device connected to your speakers.

Note: If your workplace specifically wants Top 40 hits or mainstream radio, you will still need a licence from OneMusic. Melodial is for workplaces that want a great atmosphere without the premium cost of mainstream licensing.
