How to Connect Your Google Nest to Your Phone

Play Melodial through your Google Nest, Google Home, or Nest Mini using Bluetooth. Works with iPhone and Android.

What you'll need

Before you start: Make sure your Google Nest / Google Home is plugged in, powered on, and connected to WiFi. You'll also need the Melodial app or web player on your phone. These instructions work for Google Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Google Home, and Google Home Mini.

The quickest method

Just say:

"Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing"

Your Google Nest will enter pairing mode. Then open your phone's Bluetooth settings and tap the device name to connect.

That's it for most people. If you need detailed steps, follow the instructions below for your phone type.

Full step-by-step instructions

Choose your phone type:

Method 1: Voice command (recommended)

1
Say "Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing"

Google will respond with "I'm ready to pair" or similar. The device is now discoverable via Bluetooth.

2
Open Settings → Bluetooth on your iPhone

Tap Settings, then Bluetooth. Make sure the Bluetooth toggle is on (green).

3
Tap your Google Nest in the device list

Under Other Devices, look for your speaker's name — e.g. "Living Room speaker", "Nest Mini", or whatever you named it in the Google Home app. Tap it to connect.

4
Wait for "Connected"

Google will announce the connection. Your iPhone will show the device as "Connected" in Bluetooth settings.

5
Open Melodial and press play

Open the Melodial app or go to app.melodial.com. Choose a playlist and press play. Music will come through your Google Nest.

Next time: Just say "Hey Google, Bluetooth" and it will reconnect to the last paired device. Or turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone — it may reconnect automatically.

Method 2: Using the Google Home app

1
Open the Google Home app

Download it from the App Store if you don't have it. Sign in with the same Google account linked to your speaker.

2
Tap your Google Nest device

Find your speaker on the home screen and tap it. Then tap the gear icon (⚙) in the top-right corner to open device settings.

3
Tap Audio → Paired Bluetooth Devices

Scroll down to the Audio section and tap Paired Bluetooth Devices. Then tap Enable Pairing Mode.

4
Connect from your iPhone's Bluetooth settings

Go to iPhone Settings → Bluetooth and tap your Google Nest from the list. Once connected, open Melodial and press play.

Method 1: Voice command (recommended)

Swipe down and long-press the Bluetooth icon, or go to Settings → Connected devices → Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth on and tap Pair new device.

3
Tap your Google Nest in the available devices list

Look for your speaker's name. Tap it to connect. Confirm the pairing if prompted.

Troubleshooting

My phone can't find the Google Nest
Make sure the speaker is in pairing mode — say "Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing" again. Pairing mode lasts about 2 minutes. Also try turning your phone's Bluetooth off and on. Make sure you're within 10 metres of the speaker.
It connects but no sound comes out
Say "Hey Google, volume 5" to check the volume. On iPhone, open Control Centre, long-press the music widget, and tap the AirPlay icon to make sure audio is routing to the Google Nest. Make sure Melodial is actually playing.
Google says "Bluetooth is not available on this device"
Some older Google Home devices need a firmware update for Bluetooth to work. Open the Google Home app, tap your device, then tap the gear icon and check for updates. All current Nest Mini, Nest Audio, and Google Home devices support Bluetooth.
The speaker keeps disconnecting
Stay within 10 metres of the speaker. If your phone's WiFi drops, the Melodial stream may pause — but Bluetooth should stay connected. Close battery-saving apps that might kill Bluetooth in the background. On Android, go to Settings → Battery → Melodial and set to "Unrestricted".
Can I use Google Cast instead of Bluetooth?
If you're using the Melodial web player (app.melodial.com) in Chrome on Android, you can cast directly using the Cast button — no Bluetooth needed. This uses WiFi instead of Bluetooth, which can give more stable playback. On iPhone, Bluetooth is the easier option as Cast support varies.
I want to disconnect
Say "Hey Google, Bluetooth disconnect" or turn off Bluetooth on your phone.

Useful voice commands

Say this What it does
"Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing" Puts speaker in pairing mode
"Hey Google, Bluetooth" Reconnects to last paired device
"Hey Google, Bluetooth disconnect" Disconnects the current device
"Hey Google, volume 5" Sets volume to 50% (range: 1–10)
"Hey Google, volume up" Increases volume
"Hey Google, stop" Stops playback

Tip: For the best experience, use the Nest Audio rather than the Nest Mini — it has a much larger speaker driver and sounds significantly better at higher volumes, making it ideal for small business environments.
