What practices pay for waiting room music
If your patients can hear music — in the waiting room, reception, or treatment areas — you need a licence. Collecting societies charge based on premises size and number of rooms where music is audible. Melodial replaces both the licence and the music source.
| Practice Size | Spotify + OneMusic | Melodial |
|---|---|---|
| Small practice waiting room only |
$500+/yrlicence + streaming | $99.99/yrmusic + licence included |
| Multi-room practice waiting room + treatment rooms |
$800+/yrlicence + streaming | $99.99/yrmusic + licence included |
| Large clinic / medical centre multiple zones |
$1,500+/yrlicence + streaming | $99.99/yrmusic + licence included |

Fees based on published OneMusic rate schedules. Traditional licensing does not include a music source.
How can we skip OneMusic?
OneMusic collects fees for music registered with collecting societies. If you play mainstream music in your waiting room, reception, or treatment areas — via radio, Spotify, or CDs — you owe them a licence fee.
Melodial is different. We own or directly licence every track in our catalogue. None of our music is registered with OneMusic (APRA AMCOS + PPCA) or any other collecting society. No royalties to collect means no licence fees to pay.
Your Melodial subscription is your licence. One flat price covers your entire practice — waiting room, reception, treatment rooms, and corridors.
Certificate of Compliance included. Every subscriber gets an official certificate proving your music is fully licensed. If OneMusic or any licensing body contacts your practice, show them the certificate. You're covered. And if you need help responding, forward us their email — we'll draft the reply.

Two ways to legally play music in your practice
| OneMusic licence | Melodial | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A licence covering mainstream music — songs you hear on the radio. Music not included. | An all-in-one subscription. Music and commercial licence in one payment. |
| You need this if | You play chart hits, radio, or specific mainstream tracks in your practice. | You want calming, professional music for your waiting room and treatment areas at a fixed price. |
| How it works | Annual fee based on premises size and number of rooms. Music source not included. | $9.99/month flat. Entire practice covered. Certificate of Compliance included instantly. |
Playing Spotify or the radio in your waiting room? Spotify's terms prohibit commercial use — even with Premium. And radio in a business requires a licence from OneMusic. Melodial replaces both the music and the licence.
What happens if you play unlicensed music?
OneMusic actively contacts businesses. They send letters, make phone calls, and use music recognition technology to detect unlicensed music.
The penalties are real. Collecting societies can apply back charges for up to six years of prior unlicensed music use, plus a 50% surcharge on your first year if you were playing music without a licence before being contacted. Playing copyright-protected music without a licence is an infringement under the Copyright Act 1968.
With Melodial, you're fully compliant from the moment you subscribe. No risk, no paperwork, no surprises.

Music that helps patients feel at ease
Research shows background music reduces perceived wait times and patient anxiety — particularly in dental practices where nervousness is common. Melodial's ambient and classical playlists are designed for exactly this purpose: calming, unobtrusive, and professional.
You can also create AI voice announcements for patient information — appointment reminders, hygiene notices, or practice updates — that play between tracks. No recording equipment needed.
