What you're actually paying for music today

Most café and restaurant owners pay for a music licence and a music source separately — and don't realise how much it adds up to. Even a tiny café with 15 seats pays over $960+/year to OneMusic before Spotify is even factored in. Melodial replaces both.

How can we skip OneMusic?

OneMusic collects fees for music registered with collecting societies. If you play mainstream music — Spotify, radio, CDs — you owe them a licence fee.

Melodial is different. We own or directly licence every track in our catalogue. None of our music is registered with OneMusic (APRA AMCOS + PPCA) or any other collecting society. No royalties to collect means no licence fees to pay.

Your Melodial subscription is your licence. Music and commercial rights — one payment, nothing else.

Certificate of Compliance included. Every subscriber gets an official certificate proving your music is fully licensed. If OneMusic or any licensing body contacts your venue, show them the certificate. You're covered. And if you need help responding, forward us their email — we'll draft the reply.

✓ Covered by Melodial

Public performance rights

The right to play music in a commercial environment where customers can hear it.

✓ Covered by Melodial

Melodial owns or directly licences every track. None of our music is registered with any collecting society, so no collecting society fees apply.

Two ways to legally play music in your venue

OneMusic licence Melodial
What it is A licence covering mainstream music — songs you hear on the radio. Music not included. An all-in-one subscription. Music and commercial licence in one payment.
You need this if You play chart hits, radio, TV, or host live cover bands. You want curated atmosphere music at a fixed price — and believe your venue deserves better than random radio.
How it works Annual fee that varies by business type, size, and music use. Music source not included. $9.99/month flat. No forms, no audits. Certificate of Compliance included instantly.

Already playing Spotify in your venue? Spotify's terms prohibit commercial use — even with Premium. You still need a licence from OneMusic, which costs hundreds or thousands per year on top of your Spotify subscription. Melodial replaces both.

What happens if you play unlicensed music?

OneMusic actively contacts businesses. They send letters, make phone calls, and use music recognition technology to detect unlicensed music.

The penalties are real. Collecting societies can pursue businesses for backdated fees, damages, and legal costs once they identify unlicensed use. Playing copyright-protected music without a licence is an infringement under the Copyright Act 1968.

With Melodial, you're fully compliant from the moment you subscribe. No risk, no paperwork, no surprises.

What café & restaurant owners say

★★★★★
"We stumbled upon Melodial trying to find something cheaper than paying for a music license. We were worried that the music would be quite dull and boring but to our surprise, there are a variety of playlists. We play Chill Pop and find a lot of the songs quite catchy and have even noticed some customers bobbing along."

★★★★★
"We had so much pressure trying to source a reasonably priced Performance License that streams eloquent music for a small business like ours without success. We were blessed to come across Melodial, and the lovely staff who came to our aid in the blink of an eye. They took all that pressure away."

Frequently asked questions

Is this really a legal alternative to OneMusic?
Yes. OneMusic collects fees for music registered with collecting societies. Melodial's music is not registered with any collecting society — we own or directly licence every track. If you play only Melodial, you don't owe OneMusic anything.
What if OneMusic contacts my venue?
Show them your Melodial Certificate of Compliance. It proves your music is fully licensed and not part of any collecting society's catalogue. If they push further, forward their email to us — we'll draft the response for you.
Can I still play Spotify or the radio alongside Melodial?
If you play any commercially released music — even occasionally — you still need a OneMusic licence for that music. To fully replace OneMusic, play Melodial exclusively during business hours.
Do you have mainstream artists?
No — and that's why you don't need a OneMusic licence. Our catalogue is professionally produced background music designed for commercial venues. Most customers won't notice the difference — they just want the right atmosphere.
What does the music actually sound like?
Modern, high-quality background music across 24 genres — café acoustic, jazz, bossa nova, lo-fi, pop, classical, and more. This isn't elevator music. Start a free trial and listen for yourself — no card required.
What happens if I've been playing unlicensed music?
Collecting societies can apply back charges for up to six years of prior unlicensed use, plus a 50% surcharge on your first year. The sooner you switch to Melodial, the sooner you're compliant. Subscribe today and download your Certificate of Compliance — you're covered from that moment.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. No contracts, no cancellation fees. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period.

Note: If your venue specifically requires Top 40 hits (Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, etc.), you will still need a licence from OneMusic. Melodial is for venues that want great atmosphere without the premium cost of mainstream radio hits.
