How to Connect Your Bluetooth Speaker to Your Phone

Play Melodial through any Bluetooth speaker — JBL, Bose, UE Boom, Sony, or any brand. Takes about 1 minute.

What you'll need

Before you start: Make sure your Bluetooth speaker is charged (or plugged in) and turned on. You'll need the Melodial app or web player on your phone. These instructions work for any Bluetooth speaker — JBL, Bose, UE, Sony, Marshall, Harman Kardon, Anker, and any other brand.

Step 1: Put your speaker in pairing mode

Every Bluetooth speaker has a pairing mode that makes it discoverable. The method varies by brand, but it's almost always one of these:

Brand How to enter pairing mode
JBL (Flip, Charge, Go, Xtreme, Boombox) Press the Bluetooth button (the one that looks like a Bluetooth symbol). LED will flash to indicate pairing mode.
Bose (SoundLink, SoundFlex) Press and hold the Bluetooth button until the Bluetooth indicator flashes blue. On some models, it enters pairing mode automatically when turned on for the first time.
UE Boom / Megaboom Press and hold the Bluetooth button (top of the speaker) until you hear a tone and the LED blinks.
Sony (SRS series) Press and hold the Bluetooth / Pairing button until the indicator flashes rapidly.
Marshall (Emberton, Stockwell, etc.) Press the Bluetooth button. The Bluetooth LED will flash white.
Harman Kardon Press the Bluetooth button. LED flashes blue when in pairing mode.
Anker Soundcore Press and hold the Bluetooth button for 3 seconds. LED will flash blue and white.
Any other brand Look for a button with the Bluetooth symbol (ᛒ). Press and hold it until a light flashes. Check your speaker's manual if unsure.

How to tell it's in pairing mode: Most speakers will flash a blue or white LED rapidly, play a sound, or announce "Ready to pair" through the speaker. If the LED is solid (not flashing), it's already connected to something else — you may need to disconnect the other device first.

Step 2: Connect from your phone

Choose your phone type:

1
Open Settings → Bluetooth

Tap the Settings app, then tap Bluetooth. Make sure the toggle is on (green).

2
Find your speaker under "Other Devices"

Wait a few seconds. Your speaker will appear in the list under Other Devices — it will show its brand and model name (e.g. "JBL Flip 6", "Bose SoundLink", "UE BOOM 3").

3
Tap the speaker name to connect

Tap it once. After a moment, it will show "Connected" next to the speaker name. You may hear a connection sound from the speaker.

4
Open Melodial and press play

Open the Melodial app or go to app.melodial.com in Safari. Choose a playlist or genre and press play. Music will come through your speaker.

Next time: Your iPhone will remember the speaker. Just turn the speaker on and it should reconnect automatically. If it doesn't, open Bluetooth settings and tap the speaker name — no need to re-pair.

1
Open Bluetooth settings

Swipe down from the top of your screen and long-press the Bluetooth icon. Or go to Settings → Connected devices → Bluetooth (the path varies by phone brand — Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, etc.).

2
Turn on Bluetooth and tap "Pair new device"

Make sure Bluetooth is toggled on. Tap Pair new device (or Scan on Samsung). Your phone will search for nearby Bluetooth devices.

3
Tap your speaker in the available devices list

Your speaker will show up by name (e.g. "JBL Flip 6", "Bose SoundLink"). Tap it to connect. If prompted, tap Pair to confirm.

4
Open Melodial and press play

Open the Melodial app or go to app.melodial.com. Choose a playlist and press play. Music will come through your speaker.

Next time: Your Android phone will remember the speaker. Just turn the speaker on — it should reconnect automatically. If it doesn't, go to Bluetooth settings and tap the speaker name.

No Bluetooth? Use a cable

If your speaker has a 3.5mm AUX input or your phone has a headphone jack, you can connect with a standard audio cable. This is actually more reliable than Bluetooth for all-day business use — no disconnections, no pairing issues.

1
Plug a 3.5mm audio cable into your phone and speaker

If your phone doesn't have a headphone jack (most modern phones), use a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter (Android) or Lightning to 3.5mm adapter (iPhone). These cost a few dollars from any electronics store.

2
Set the speaker to AUX/Line-in mode

Some speakers switch automatically. Others need you to press a button to switch from Bluetooth to AUX input. Check your speaker's manual.

3
Open Melodial and press play

That's it — audio goes straight from your phone to the speaker through the cable.

Troubleshooting

My phone can't find the speaker
Make sure the speaker is in pairing mode (LED flashing, not solid). Most speakers only stay in pairing mode for 1–3 minutes before timing out — press the Bluetooth button again. Also make sure your phone's Bluetooth is on and you're within about 10 metres of the speaker. If the speaker was previously connected to a different phone, it may reconnect to that phone instead — turn off Bluetooth on the other device.
It says "Connected" but no sound comes out
Check the volume on both your phone and the speaker — turn both up. Make sure Melodial is actually playing (check the play/pause button in the app). On iPhone, check Control Centre to make sure audio is routing to the Bluetooth speaker, not the phone's internal speaker.
The speaker keeps connecting to another device
Most Bluetooth speakers automatically reconnect to the last device they were paired with. Turn off Bluetooth on the other device (or "forget" the speaker in that device's Bluetooth settings). Then connect from your phone.
The music keeps cutting out or stuttering
This is usually a range issue — stay within 10 metres and avoid walls or obstructions between the phone and speaker. Also, Bluetooth can be affected by WiFi interference, microwaves, and other wireless devices. If it's a persistent problem, try the wired AUX connection instead.
How do I disconnect?
Turn off the speaker, or go to your phone's Bluetooth settings and tap the speaker name to disconnect. On iPhone, tap the "i" icon next to the speaker name, then tap "Disconnect".
Can I connect two Bluetooth speakers at the same time?
Most phones only support one Bluetooth audio connection at a time. Some newer Samsung and Pixel phones support "dual audio" — check your Bluetooth settings for a "Dual Audio" or "Connect to multiple devices" option. Alternatively, many speaker brands (JBL, UE) have their own app that lets you pair two of the same brand together.
Which Bluetooth speaker do you recommend for a business?
For a small shop, café, or salon, a JBL Charge 5 or Bose SoundLink Flex is excellent — loud enough for a small space, portable, and great battery life. For a larger venue, consider a JBL Boombox or a dedicated sound system with a Bluetooth receiver. For all-day reliability, a wired connection is always more stable than Bluetooth.

Business tip: For the most reliable all-day playback, use a wired connection (AUX cable) rather than Bluetooth. Bluetooth can disconnect if someone walks between the phone and speaker, if the phone goes to sleep, or if another device tries to connect. A cable just works. Dedicate an old phone or cheap tablet as your music player and leave it plugged in next to the speaker.

Volume tip: Set the speaker volume to about 60–70% and control the fine volume from the Melodial app. This gives you the best sound quality without distortion and lets you adjust easily throughout the day.
