Sonos speakers don't make Spotify legal

Thousands of venues run Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube through their Sonos systems every day. The sound is great — the licensing isn't. Personal and premium streaming accounts prohibit commercial use in their terms, and none of them cover the public performance rights your venue needs.

The hardware was never the problem. The music coming through it is.

Playing it on premium speakers changes nothing. Registered music playing where customers can hear it is a public performance under the Copyright Act 1968, whatever it's playing through. Without a OneMusic licence — or music that isn't registered with them at all — your Sonos system is broadcasting the evidence.

Melodial, native in the Sonos app

Melodial is now an official music service inside Sonos. Add it once from the Sonos app, sign in with your Melodial account, and every playlist in our catalogue appears alongside your other services — playable on any speaker or grouped room in your system.

Because it runs natively on Sonos, there's no phone tethered behind the counter, no Bluetooth dropouts when staff walk out of range, and no computer that has to stay awake. Set the playlist in the morning and the system does the rest — across every zone you've set up.

Every track cleared, end to end

Every track in our catalogue is owned or directly licensed by us. None of it is registered with OneMusic (APRA AMCOS + PPCA) or any other collecting society — so there's no registered work for an inspector to find, no royalties to collect, and no licence to buy from them.

One low monthly subscription replaces the streaming account that was never licensed for your venue and the collecting-society fees you'd otherwise owe on top of it.

Certificate of Compliance included. Download your official certificate any time from your account. If anyone ever questions your music, show the certificate — every track you're playing is accounted for. Forward us their email and we'll help you respond.

The honest catch: this only holds if Melodial is the only thing playing on your Sonos. If you also mix in radio, a personal Spotify account, or chart music from another service, you'd still need a OneMusic licence for that music. Play Melodial on its own and you're fully covered.

Frequently asked questions

Does Melodial really work natively on Sonos?
Yes. Melodial is an official music service in the Sonos app. You add it the same way you'd add any other service — no third-party apps, no line-in cables, no workarounds.
Do I need any extra hardware?
No. If your Sonos system already works with the current Sonos app, Melodial plays on it as-is — including grouped rooms and multi-zone setups.
I already play Spotify through my Sonos. Isn't that fine?
No. Personal and premium streaming accounts prohibit commercial use in their terms, and they don't include the public performance rights your venue needs. The speakers are irrelevant — it's the music source that has to be licensed.
How does Melodial make it legal without a OneMusic licence?
We own or directly licence every track, so none of it is registered with any collecting society. Your Melodial subscription includes a direct commercial licence from us, and you can download a Certificate of Compliance proving it at any time.
Can staff still control the music?
Yes — from the Sonos app on any authorised device, exactly like any other Sonos service. Change playlists, adjust zones, group rooms. Because playback runs on the Sonos system itself, it keeps playing when phones leave the building.
Can I still use Spotify on the same Sonos at home?
Your home is your business — personal listening at home isn't a public performance. In your venue, though, Melodial should be the only source playing. Mixing in other services at work would put you back where you started.

The speakers were always right. Fix the music.
